Goals. How to get from A to B? In most every non-trivial endeavor this is not an easy question to answer. Many variables (known and unknown) affect one another; constraints on time, energy, money; access to accurate/effective knowledge and having the mental disposition and motivation level to put it to use consistently. Move forward. Take action. Drive. Here are some of my thoughts…
- Have an end goal in mind. Think of it as a target to aim for or sort of your north star to guide your actions. While realizing this is a process — there is no one true path — and that ‘the horizon will always be out there.’ Though as you learn and apply, you will be further along the path and closer to your ideal.
- Take inventory of your starting point. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What can you do to leverage your strengths while keeping you weaknesses in check? What are the major roadblocks standing in your way and what can you do to overcome them? IMHO: Effective/insightful questioning followed by action is the key to success in life’s endeavors.
- Decision Feedback Analysis – This is basically a form of tracking, self-evaluation, and self-correcting: Open up a spreadsheet and label columns (Current date, Goal, Evaluation date, Results). Think of where you want to go, take action using best information currently available, at a future date (maybe week, month, quarter; you decide) think and evaluate results in writing, and correct future actions as need be.
- Learn from those who have gone before. Read their books, talk to them, ask questions, take what they offer and only apply what works for the unique you.
